Quick start and answers

Use CrashCompute with a clear, reviewable workflow

Start with the evidence, document every material input, review the method, and preserve both an editable case and a fixed report. The guide below explains each step and the most common saving, sharing, and calculation questions.

Quick start

Six steps for a new case

Use this sequence from the first measurement through final preservation. Return to an earlier step whenever better information becomes available.

  1. 01Start or restore

Open the Workbench for a new case. If earlier work is found on this device, choose Restore only when you want to continue it.

  2. 02Set units and mode

Select US or Metric units first. Use Florida Investigation Mode only when its labels, conventions, and references are useful.

  3. 03Choose from evidence

Select a worksheet because its method fits the evidence. Choose a Tool can help identify possible starting points.

  4. 04Enter supported values

Record each material value, its Investigation Source, and a defensible uncertainty when known. Confirm units, signs, and assumptions.

  5. 05Review and capture

Read the worked solution and limitations. Select Add to case file only when the calculation is ready to preserve.

  6. 06Corroborate and export

Compare independent methods when possible. Keep an encrypted editable case file and a fixed PDF or printed record as required by policy.

Saving at a glance

Four different kinds of saved work

Autosave, Case File capture, portable storage, and cloud storage are related, but they are not the same action.

Working session

Browser autosave

Current worksheet and case work is saved in this browser as you go.

Not a permanent archive
Organized record

Case File capture

Add to case file captures a reviewed worksheet with its inputs, provenance, uncertainty, formula, and solution.

Requires a deliberate click
Storage you control

Encrypted portable case

Save to a device, synced folder, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive with a case password.

Free and paid plans
CrashCompute Cloud

Encrypted cloud case

Paid plans add private cloud storage with optional password-protected view or edit sharing.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to common questions

Open each question for the answer. For method-specific limits and sources, also read the notes and references inside the selected worksheet.

Getting started

Where should I start?

Open the Workbench, enter the case details, confirm US or Metric units, then choose a worksheet from the evidence you have. If you are unsure which method fits, use Choose a Tool.

Which worksheet should I use?

Use the worksheet whose assumptions and required evidence match the case. A result is not reliable merely because all fields can be filled. Review the method notes and use an independent method when one is available.

Does entering values add the calculation to my Case File?

No. Worksheet fields are part of the working session. Select Add to case file after reviewing the result to capture its inputs, provenance, uncertainty, formula, and worked solution.

Can I work without an internet connection?

Previously loaded worksheets and local browser work can remain available offline. Cloud saves, provider storage, account checks, live weather, and other network features require a connection.

Methods and results

What does minimum speed mean?

It is the speed accounted for by the documented energy-loss evidence and stated assumptions. It may not include speed lost before the measured evidence began or through unmodeled mechanisms.

How should I record source and uncertainty?

Use Investigation Source to identify where a material value came from, such as a total station, GNSS or RTK, scanner, photograph, EDR or CDR, vehicle inspection, drag test, roadway plan, witness information, or analyst assumption. Enter a plus-or-minus uncertainty only when it has a defensible basis, such as instrument tolerance, repeated measurements, or a documented analytical bound.

When should I use Range Runner or Monte Carlo?

Use Range Runner to see the effect of supported low-to-high input bounds. Use Monte Carlo only when the probability distributions and relationships you select can be supported. Neither tool turns an unsupported range into evidence.

What does Florida Investigation Mode change?

It surfaces Florida and FPSI or FHP terminology, the Florida yaw convention, center-of-mass radius guidance, FDOT references, and Florida-specific labels. It does not change valid physics or make a Florida convention appropriate outside its stated use.

What is Formula Comparison mode for?

It places supported methods side by side so you can see how conventions, assumptions, or design criteria affect the result. The explanation is part of the review. The tool does not choose the legally or scientifically appropriate method for the investigator.

Saving and privacy

What saves automatically?

The working session autosaves in this browser. A worksheet is not part of the organized Case File until you select Add to case file. A portable or cloud copy is created only when you choose Save.

What is the difference between local, provider, and cloud storage?

Local browser autosave is the working copy. Device, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive saves create encrypted portable case files in storage you control. CrashCompute Cloud is a paid option for an encrypted case with controlled link sharing. See case storage help for provider details.

Are saved case files encrypted?

Portable case files and CrashCompute Cloud case contents are encrypted in the browser with the case password. CrashCompute cannot decrypt the case or recover a forgotten password.

Who can open a cloud case?

New cloud cases start private. The owner can keep the case private or allow view or edit access. A recipient needs both the case link and password. Send them through separate channels.

What happens if I forget a case password?

CrashCompute cannot recover it or decrypt the case. Keep the password in an agency-approved password manager or other separate record, never only in the same message or folder as the case link or file.

Review and reporting

Which exports should I keep?

Keep the encrypted editable case file for recovery and a fixed PDF or printed record for review. Retain source materials and any additional format required by agency policy.

Does CrashCompute replace training or professional judgment?

No. CrashCompute documents arithmetic and method inputs. The investigator remains responsible for evidence classification, applicability, assumptions, interpretation, and reporting.

How do I report an error or unclear instruction?

Email crash@crashcompute.com. Include the worksheet name, the step or wording involved, the expected behavior, and a screenshot when it can be shared without exposing sensitive case information.

Ready to begin?

Open the Workbench for a guided starting point, or browse by the evidence already documented in the case.
